What We Do

The Atlantic Avenue Betterment Association (AABA) is a grass-roots non-profit membership organization dedicated to protecting and improving the quality of life on the eleven Avenue blocks between Furman Street and Fourth Avenue.

• Promote the Avenue as a desirable place to live, work, shop and visit.
• Preserve the unique Victorian architectural heritage
• Present the views of the Atlantic Avenue community to public officials.

AABA Promotes Pedestrian Friendly Streets

• AABA promotes a Trolley loop around downtown to cultural, retail and educational destinations.
• AABA promotes restoring parking on the South side of Atlantic between 4 – 7 PM. Parked cars protect pedestrians and provide parking for customers.
• AABA continues its participation in the Downtown Brooklyn Traffic Calming Project.
• AABA prevented the Department of Transportation from narrowing the sidewalk on the Avenue.
• AABA promotes Pier 6 as part of the Brooklyn Bridge Park at the foot of Atlantic Avenue.

AABA Works To Maintain Our Architectural Heritage

• AABA published a 28 page Walking Guide to promote our neighborhood’s historic legacy.
• AABA finds matching grants for Avenue improvement projects (see our Signage Grant Program)
• AABA sponsors a successful graffiti removal program
  

AABA Promotes The Business Community

• AABA completed a parking study to document parking permit abuses. The abuse robs merchants of customer parking and reduces parking meter income for the City.
• AABA helped 12 merchants install new attractive shop signs and is processing another 12 applications. (see our Signage Grant Program)
• AABA publishes and distributes a AABA Shopping Guide featuring Avenue merchants
• AABA launched its own web site 
• AABA works with merchants to organize special events
• AABA restored parking from Court St. to Boerum Pl.
• AABA places group advertising
• AABA published a marketing study to create a new identity for the Avenue and to strengthen existing businesses

Future Projects

• AABA is part of a coalition  of neighborhood groups, elected officials, developers working together to close the Brooklyn House of Detention.
• AABA is promoting a No Permit Parking Zone to provide metered parking for customers.
• AABA promotes reconnecting the Heights/ Cobble Hill part of the Avenue with the Boerum Hill part by improving the blocks between Court and Smith Streets
• AABA is working with developers to bring retail and residential growth to the Avenue and the Hoyt Schermerhorn sites.

AABA issues Atlantic Currents, our quarterly newsletter,  covering business and community issues and events.
